5009UG+S+ MikroTik RouterBORD

Experience with 5009UG+S+ MikroTik RouterBORD

Problem

The 5009UG+S+ MikroTik RouterBORD was chosen for a home server project to isolate the server from the home network. However, it turned out to be a total failure on several levels. The first router bricked itself, and the second router wouldn't allow access. The company from the EU did not stand behind their products.

Solution

Decided to build a custom home server. The build was based on a 6th gen Intel i5 in a Dell Optiplex, costing around $35. The custom build provided a strong system with a custom configuration and very strict security. The build process took about 100 hours of learning.

Overview

The custom-built server has a user interface with easy-to-read performance specs and is now on version 3.

Parts

- 6th gen Intel i5
- Dell Optiplex (used)

Steps

1. Decide to build a custom home server.
2. Assemble the parts: 6th gen Intel i5 in a Dell Optiplex.
3. Spend about 100 hours learning and setting up the custom configuration.
4. Develop a user interface with easy-to-read performance specs.

Notes

The build process was easier than expected once the learning curve was overcome. The custom setup includes very strict security measures. The build and software details are available upon request.
