Building our first Voron 2.4r2

Overview

Our goal is to build a Voron 2.4r2 3D printer with an emphasis on sourcing inexpensive components from China. We are using a Duet3 controller with a Raspberry Pi setup for the interface and control system.

Parts

  • Frame: Heavily discounted but with good quality and specs.
  • Drive parts: 20% discounted.
  • Hardware kit: 20% less.
  • Rails: 20-30% less.
  • Bed: 220V, purchased from Amazon for $80 delivered (includes $90 shipping fee). The total cost is around $170. An 110V to 220V upconverter adds $35, making the total $115.

Steps

Gathering Parts

1. Source inexpensive mechanical components from China. 2. Purchase a Duet3 controller with a Raspberry Pi setup. 3. Begin assembly with the parts gathered.

Tool Usage

Create a tools category to explain terminal end builds on the Duet3 controller.

Bed Leveling

Problem

Variable results from bed leveling due to moving the gantry assembly, such as from a head crash or accidental tugging.

Solution

1. Use cabinet trim board laid on the bed to support the gantry on both sides, ensuring the machine passes the true bed leveling command. 2. Ensure the bed is within 1mm for automatic leveling.

Steps for Manual Adjustment

1. Enable control of the head assembly with `m564 S0 H0`. 2. Move the head to the first corner and jog down until it contacts the measure device. 3. Zero the Z for initial setting with `G92 Z0`. 4. Lift the head 5mm and proceed to the next corner. 5. Release the motor with `M84` and manually lower the head until it contacts the measure stick. 6. Repeat for each corner, ensuring the head contacts the measure point and Z is set to 0. 7. Use `M84` to release motors and `M302 P1` to allow cold extrusion. 8. Disable steppers with `M84`.

Notes

  • The Duet3 controller with Raspberry Pi setup is chosen for its superior interface and production capabilities, even though it is more expensive.
  • The bed leveling process can be tricky and requires careful attention to avoid driving the unit where it doesn't want to go.
