Small bed tacoma kayak rack for least amount of money

Overview

The goal was to transport two kayaks to Everglades Park with a budget-friendly solution for a small bed Tacoma.

Problem

The available kayak racks were expensive, around $400 for an aluminum setup compatible with the Toyota tie-down system, totaling around $450.

Solution

A low-profile rack system was chosen, costing approximately $170 for the rack and $50 for the carriers.

Steps

1. Installed the low-profile kayak rack over the cab.
2. Secured the kayak carriers using proper hardware and through bolts in the 4 mounts.
3. Transported the kayaks to Everglades Park and through South Florida.

Notes

- Initial concern about possible sway at 75-80 mph was alleviated by the solid system.
- Removal of the rack was quick and easy, allowing for storage and reinstallation of the bed cover.
- The carriers were noted to be poorly designed, with stove bolts stripping out the carrier when tightened.
- The system is estimated to have at least 10 trips left in it.
- Future plans include towing a boat for an Atlantic Gulf Stream trip.
