Where Things Stand Now

• Bill Kristol / “NeverTrump” crowd → They’ve basically shifted into a “respectable opposition” lane, often more aligned with Democrats than with populist Republicans. That’s why they feel like traitors to a lot of grassroots conservatives.
• National Review types → Still conservative in theory (tax cuts, deregulation, strong defense), but they recoil at MAGA populism. That puts them in direct conflict with the new Republican base.
